Linux Presentation Day

call for participation in LPD 2016.1

The Linux Presentation Day 2015.2 had 79 locations in 72 cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and more than 1,400 visitors. The LPD 2016.1 will be on April, 30th 2016.

We are now looking for people abroad who organize the participation in LPD 2016.1 for a few locations in additional countries so that they gain experience with this kind of event and can organize a nationwide participation for LPD 2016.2 (October / November). Of course, you can participate without an obligation to organize a nationwide event later.

how to participate

The general concept of the event (idea and aims) is described here as a summary. Detailed descriptions are currently available only in German (idea and aims, how to become an organizer).

necessary resources

As a basic principle it is very simple and free of charge to participate in the LPD because each local organizer decide how they want to arrange their event. There are only very few mandatory requirements. The minimum effort – which, of course, in practice depends on the amount of expected visitors and thus must be related to the media and advertising activities – are three computers running different Linux desktop environments and three people who can show the visitors how to use Linux and can answer questions.

talks

There is no need to have talks. If you have an additional room for talks then it makes sense to have a short talk about the most important differences between Linux and Windows every hour or every two hours.

WWW

It is enough to have a simple single web page for this event within your normal web site. You have to set a link to the international or (if available) national web site i.e. to www.linux-presentation-day.org or ww.linux-presentation-day.$cctld and should use the event logo. There are no requirements for the design.

This web page should contain a hint that you are looking for e.g.

You should mention the helpers even if you don't need them as this may motivate people to contact you which may increase the probability that they become new members.

media and advertising

Until there is a nationwide organization you should not contact the nationwide media (except for IT media). You should contact your local media. Experience shows that sending a press release is not enough. A cooperation with a university, school, adult evening classes or other public institution may increase the probability that the media cover your event (and may solve your room and computer problem and give you easy access to more helpers).

printed material

In Germany the central organization has printed posters, stickers, and flyers and sent them to the local organizers free of charge. Whether and to which extent this is possible for other countries depends on which budget we will be capable of raising. Maybe there will be only posters and stickers in English with the international web site URL. It would be great, of course, if you can find a sponsor and contribute to the budget.

make it official

You can delay your final decision whether to participate of not until the day on which you have to send your press release. Of course, we would like to know in advance that you are considering participation. This may help you to get in contact with other interested organizations in your country.

You can (and should) make an early announcement with reservation, though. Then we can put a link to you on the international web site which may be useful for finding helpers and sponsors and (later) preparing a nationwide organization. It should also support the overall motivation to see that more organizations are interested and may help the locations abroad with their press releases.
